6-yr Old Spends 10hrs with Killed Father

The Moutons’ 6-year old daughter, Monay, spent ten hours sitting next to her father’s body after he was shot in the heart on Tuesday night. Monay waited next to her father’s body until the domestic worker arrived the next morning at 07:30 and called the police.

According to Mrs Mouton, Monay was in bed next to her father when he was shot. “She says she didn’t hear the shot. She was woken by the three robbers who asked her for the safe keys.

They went through the house and rummaged around in files in our home office. “Monay tried to wake my husband and begged the robbers to phone me, but they refused.

She later asked them to leave the house, “because they were making a mess in her dad’s office”.”

A heartbroken Verulam woman has told how her boyfriend’s joblessness led him to chop off his two-year-old son’s head and then to hang himself. The toddler’s decapitated and decomposed body was found stashed in a black bag in a bush on Friday, after two agonising weeks of searching for him – full story here.

15yr old German Girl and 22 yr old Dutch Charity Worker raped in South Africa

A 15-year-old German girl was raped, allegedly by two armed men who broke into a chalet she was sharing with her 14-year-old brother at a bed and breakfast facility in Addo. The two men allegedly raped the teenager while her brother watched helplessly.

In the second incident, a 27-year-old man was arrested after he allegedly raped a 22-year-old woman from the Netherlands early hours of Saturday morning.

Circumcisions kill 20 boys in South Africa

Twenty South African boys have died following botched circumcisions in the Eastern Cape Province. “The deaths occurred over the past 12 days, with nine of them occurring over the past 24 hours,” said a provincial health spokesperson.

Some 60 boys have been rescued from 11 initiation schools which have since been closed. “Four of the boys even need their genitals removed completely, as it could result in death if it’s not.”

South Africa is one of the only countries to have recorded an increase in maternal and child mortality in recent years, a shocking reality for which both former president Thabo Mbeki and President Jacob Zuma share responsibility…Today, instead of discussing emancipation, our national discourse is framed by polygamy. Rapper 50 Cent declares “have a baby by me, baby, be a millionaire”. Our president, himself a singer and dancer, seems to say “have a baby by me, baby, be a first lady”, much to the delight of cartoonists. We laugh, but the joke is on us. The growing conservatism in the ruling party threatens the future of all women and all democrats…

“Mother” to 4 at age 10

Many thousands of South African children live in homes with no parents, largely as a result of HIV/Aids. Life is desperate for the children left at the head of their families.

At the age of 10, Nokubonga Qaba was left with the daunting responsibility of raising her four younger siblings in a remote village in Eastern Cape Province.

Now aged 17, she says her family knows the pain of going to bed on an empty stomach all too well. “Sometimes there is no food in the house for days and I have to go knocking on neighbours’ doors begging for food for my family,” she says. “Sometimes they give, sometimes they don’t.”

Her plight is not unique in South Africa. About 150,000 youngsters are raised by other children after their parents die…
